"The passion that Made Wijaya has for gardens extends to the design of buildings in the landscape".

— The Tropical Asian House, 1996 Robert Powell

"Wijaya is also an authority on the history of Balinese architecture, and the Villa Bebek, which he designed and built in 1990, is a unique laboratory for living and working in the tropics. Within the compact dimensions of this walled compound, which was architecturally inspired by blending of colonial and traditional styles found in Balinese palaces, are nine pavilions housing design studios, offices, kitchens, residential quarters for wijaya, and guest cottages. Each of these open onto garden terraces on at least two sides. The harmonious knitting of the various activities within the limited space is what makes the Villa Bebek a success, and it is all done with landscaping. An interweaving of courtyards, walls punctuated with variety of Balinese gateway openings, ornamental pools, strategically placed shade trees, hedges, decorative planting, and paving provide a rch variety of visual experiences. Yet where it is needed, privacy can be found".
